There’s probably no one word that can describe what a Mother feels like when her child has a cold or a fever. From the outside a Mother is always calm. And there is probably no other person on Earth that will know you as well as your Mother. I remember how my Mom would know the right way to get rid of a cold. And she would always know what I needed given any situation.
A few days ago, a lady named Lisa from Florida got in touch with me. I had been promoting the SickKids Hospital Volleyball Event that was approaching and Lisa sent me a sweet note. Lisa later revealed that her son Robert was born with cancer calledhepatoblastoma.
What is hepatoblastoma?
Hepatoblastoma is a very rare cancerous tumor that originates in the liver. The liver is one of the largest organs in the body. The primary functions of the liver include filtering and storing blood. The liver consists of right and left lobes. Most hepatoblastoma tumors originate in the right lobe.
Robert went to the ICU shortly after he was born. It was during the ultrasound where they discovered the ’shadow.’ Robert went through two major surgeries in the first month of his life. Lisa considers the ’shadow’ a gift. If they didn’t find it in time, their life would be very different, for Robert would have had to start Chemo. “The doctors and staff at our local hospital as well as Miami Children’s Hospital are lifesavers” Robert’s Mom says. Lisa also has a message for all Parents that are facing this simliar situation, “be strong and believe in the doctors and the nurses and caretakers of your child during this difficult time.” Today Robert is a healthy 5 year old boy who has a 4 year old sister, Ally. I admire Lisa’s strength and courage. I thank her and Robert for allowing me to share their story in the hopes that it inspires other Mothers & Parents. Her outlook on life is one that I pray all Mothers have. I can totally agree that there is no greater gift than a child.
